An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

Next pet him across his top line and gradually pet your way across his spine and down his opposite side. Pat him there. Pet the devil out of his ears, scratch under his chin, make a game out of playing "Peekaboo" covering his eyes one at a time, then both together. Get really creative. When or if you find resistance, keep petting (or waving or scratching, etc.) for 15 seconds or until the horse calms down, whichever comes first. (Remember, stopping your petting when he tenses sensitizes our patient rather than desensitizes.) Take the time to dull him to movement, fast and slow, on all sides of his head (don't forget under and over), paying particular attention to his ears and eyes. All of this work on his off side is necessary because in a few minutes you'll want to reach across to bring the halter around – and if you've skipped this step, your hand running past his eye can become an issue. As with our previous work, should he step away, stay still, slowly turn, kiss to bring him back, remain business-like – and don't give chase.
