An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

Leading training doesn't start with "forward." It starts with breaking some ice. Were you to pick up the lead and start walking, he might follow a few steps, but within a short span, he'll find some reason to plant his feet and refuse to budge. Fighting pressure is a natural response. To prove it, walk up to any person and hold your palm toward them. Just look at them and they'll respond by putting their palm against yours. If you then push, 999 out of 1000 people will push back. Why? Who knows, but your horse is wired the same way. "Giving in" is not a normal reaction and far from instinctual, but we'll begin today to re-wire your colt, working to make it his first response.
