An excerpt from "Rein In Your Horse's Speed Course [Downloadable PDF]":

Which brings us to an interesting point: I've just said "Expect your horse to do exactly as you ask." But we all know that there will be many times when he won't - or can't. What to do? The answer is simple: When you get in that situation, find something you can release on so that both you and your horse "win." If you decide "I want Flicka to step on that leaf" - and he misses it by a mile - then one solution is to hang on till the horse relaxes and simultaneously takes a step in the right direction. Another would be to change your angle (and amount of) pressure and disengage (turn) his hips. In both cases you've gotten out of the horse's mouth - and the horse has learned that he'll find a release when he softens and follows rein pressure. Your job here is to simply motivate the horse to keep trying to find the answer - not to bend him to your will.

The next time you ask "to move onto that red leaf," you may want to try breaking it down into easier movements. Still be specific - but now it's step "four inches closer to the red leaf." Always, always, always try to put your horse in a position where he can only answer "yes" by looking for ways to make things simple. Then repeat those steps again and again, whittling it down, aiming toward that leaf. The main point here is that you need to have specific goals in mind that you keep moving towards. "Step on the red leaf with your right front foot" is great. "Step over there" is not. (rpt)
