An excerpt from "Round Pen First Steps [Downloadable PDF version]":

When you let go of the horse's foot, you should do just that: Let go. If the foot drops a time or two, he'll quickly learn to hold it himself, rather than developing the annoying habit of placing more and more weight on you. Being overly concerned about our horse's balance is a major cause of leaning. Trust me, he doesn't want to tip over and is more than capable of standing squarely, so to speak, on three feet. If the horse knows that you can and will drop his foot at any time he'll be careful to not place weight on that foot.

To train those front feet, stand on your horse's left side and simply press on his shoulder, in effect, pushing him directly away. You don't have to apply that much pressure, just enough to be rather annoying, sending a clear signal that you're looking for something. That something is just this: "Horse, shift your weight to the opposite foot." Remember that a lowly fly can cause your horse to move by landing on a lip and being irritating enough, so practice patience. If your horse leans into your press, then ask the back legs to disengage (shoulder stays put, hips move away). Moving that four hundred pound butt is work, so disengagement is a terrific motivator. The movement also helps transfer some of the weight to the back half of the horse. (rpt)
